Minehead – The Gateway To Exmoor & The West Somerset Railway

Minehead has long attracted visitors to its beautiful and charismatic coastal location. There are beaches to explore, a fishing quarter and an historic harbour. There’s a 14th century church on the iconic North Hill and the much-photographed Church Steps. Take a walk down tree-lined avenues and visit a selection of tea rooms, pubs and independent shops in the town centre, or just relax, take a seat, and watch the world go by on the seafront or in the flower-filled Blenheim Gardens. Minehead is the ideal spot from which to explore the surrounding historic villages and beautiful countryside.

Our base for the tour is the Northfield Hotel, situated on the lower slopes of North Hill and surrounded by nearly two acres of gardens. Enjoy sweeping views of the coastline and Exmoor itself. The hotel has a restaurant and a relaxing lounge bar together with leisure facilities. All bedrooms offer modern facilities and free WiFi.

MONDAY

We depart calling for coffee en-route to the seaside town of Clevedon where we stop for a browse and lunch. Why not take a walk along Clevedon Pier; once described by Sir John Betjeman as “the most beautiful pier in England”. Why not bring along a picnic or have lunch in one of the pubs and eateries. After lunch we continue our journey to Minehead.

TUESDAY

Today we head along the coast into North Devon to the villages or Lynton and Lynmouth, otherwise known as England’s ‘Little Switzerland’. Enjoy a relaxing walk along the coastline or take a trip up the famous Funicular Cliff Railway, which is the highest and the steepest entirely water-powered railway in the world. After lunch we take the scenic route across Exmoor to the village of Simonsbath where we call for a delicious cream tea.

WEDNESDAY

Today we enjoy a nostalgic steam train ride from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard through the glorious Somerset countryside. The West Somerset Railway is the longest steam heritage railway in the country, and beautiful views await. Afterwards we re-board the coach and head to the unique medieval village of Dunster; over 200 listed buildings and an impressive castle are accompanied by dramatic vistas and subtropical gardens. You will have ample free time to enjoy lunch, take a stroll around the village and even visit the castle if you wish. (Please note this day trip may be in reverse depending on the train times.)

THURSDAY

A free day in Minehead to explore at leisure.

FRIDAY

Today we head for home, calling en-route for coffee we make our lunch stop in the city of Worcester. Why not visit the Cathedral or the museum, take a stroll around the shops or simply take your time and relish a relaxing lunch. We continue home making a quick comfort stop.
