Scotland’s Newest Scenic Route – Route 250: The North East Coast & Countryside

The Route 250 might just be Scotland’s best-kept secret, encompassing everything Scotland is famous for in one unique road trip. The circular route begins in ‘the Granite City’ of Aberdeen and offers an unforgettable drive through a breathtaking variety of landscapes in Aberdeenshire, Speyside and Moray. We discover the aweinspiring castles of Royal Deeside, such as Crathes Castle and Drum Castle. We take the road that winds through the dramatic mountain passes of the Cairngorms, Britain’s largest and wildest National Park. Stopping off at the world-famous malt whisky distilleries of Speyside, enjoy a wee dram while admiring the beaches and seaside villages of the Moray Firth. With fascinating culture and awe-inspiring landscapes, this new tour is one straight off the bucket list!

MONDAY

Making an early departure we journey north, calling for coffee en-route we make Moffatt our lunch stop. Continuing on and calling for afternoon refreshments en-route to Aberdeen, we make our home at the Aberdeen Dyce Hotel for the next two nights. An independent hotel offering a modern lounge and dining room, there is also an indoor swimming pool and gym, and all bedrooms have en-suite facilities.

TUESDAY

This morning we meet our guide to explore the many sights of the exciting city of Aberdeen. After lunch we join Route 250 to Crathes Castle; standing against a backdrop of rolling hills and set within its own glorious gardens it is every inch the classic Scottish tower house. Enjoy the afternoon exploring the castle with its’ ornately painted ceilings, and don’t forget to visit the ancient yew hedges dating from 1702.

WEDNESDAY

Bidding farewell to Aberdeen we rejoin the scenic Route 250 north through Cruden Bay and Macdonald’s, with our first port of call being the bustling fishing port of Fraserburgh. The Scottish Lighthouse Museum is our morning refreshment stop and from the tearoom windows dolphins, porpoises and cormorants are often spotted. We then continue back on Route 250 to Gordon Castle Estate Café for a spot of lunch. Heading south west we make our way to Grantown on Spey, nestled in the heart of the scenic Scottish Highlands. Just a few minutes off Route 250 is the Grant Arms Hotel and our base for the next four nights. An impressive 18th century residence the hotel offers modern comforts whilst retaining traditional character. Each room is en-suite with complimentary tea tray.

THURSDAY

No visit to Scotland would be complete without a visit to a whisky distillery! So this morning you have the option of visiting the Cairn Whisky Distillery, nestled in the Cairngorms National Park and just a short distance from the hotel (Guided tour and tasting £25.00 Per person. Please confirm at the time of booking if you would like to visit). For the afternoon we head to Aviemore for a relaxing and scenic trip on the Strathspey Vintage Railway to Broomhill.

FRIDAY

Once again joining Route 250, we head to Braemar and its Castle. Stopping at Crathie Kirk, the church of choice for the British royal family when they are in residence at nearby Balmoral Castle. After our visit we take the short journey to the village of Braemar with time for lunch before our visit to the 17th Century Braemar Castle. An iconic landmark in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, it was built by the Earl of Mar in 1628 and has been a hunting lodge, fortress, garrison and family home.

SATURDAY

A free day for you to explore Grantown on Spey. Why not take a stroll to the museum, browse around the shops and enjoy a leisurely lunch. The choice is yours!

SUNDAY

We say a sad farewell to Bonnie Scotland and head south. Calling for morning coffee, lunch and afternoon refreshments along the way, we aim to arrive early evening.
