The North East of England is a region of castles, Norman cathedrals, and Naval greatness; an epicness paralleled by its rugged natural beauty. Our tour aims to immerse you in this stunning scenery, to welcome you to this bustling culture and introduce you to this rich history. Along the way we pay a visit to Raby Castle, the jewel in the crown of County Durham and one of England’s finest medieval structures, as well as the Maritime Museum in Hartlepool and Crook Hall Gardens. Our favourite guide Tom Keating will wow us with his knowledge of picturesque Teesdale, and Durham is yours to explore with its array of internationally renowned sites. To complete our holiday, we take our seats at the amazing Kynren Show, a performance of incredible proportions.
Staying at the Redworth Hall Hotel in County Durham, this stunning 17th-century Jacobean manor house resides in the blissful tranquillity of 26 acres. Boasting a pool, lift, bar and restaurant, the chic style of the bedrooms is accompanied by modern en-suite facilities.
FRIDAY
We depart stopping for coffee en-route, to Raby Castle, one of the most impressive intact castles in the North of England. Built in the 14th century by the powerful Nevill family, it has a kaleidoscopic history waiting to be discovered. After ample time to wander the castle and gardens as well as enjoy spot of lunch in the café, we make our way to our hotel.
SATURDAY
Today we head to the coast and the National Museum of the Royal Navy. Set in an authentic recreation of an historic quayside from the 1800s, learn about the tough life of a sailor serving under Admiral Lord Nelson during the Battle of Trafalgar. See what life was like on board HMS Trincomalee, the oldest warship still afloat in the UK and the jewel in the historic quayside of Hartlepool. We return to the hotel for an early dinner before taking the short drive to the amazing Kynren Show; described as one of the ‘Top Five Performances to see in the UK’, prepare yourself for incredible sets, stunts, horsemanship, world class pyrotechnics and a cast and crew of over 1500 volunteers!
SUNDAY
At a more leisurely pace today, after breakfast we meet our guide Tom for a tour of Teesdale. Sit back and relax as the coach takes us through stunning landscapes; making photo and refreshment stops along the way, we will also call for lunch while we are out and about.
MONDAY
Today we take the short journey to Durham, and the day is yours to spend as you please. Why not visit the Cathedral, take a stroll around the shops or venture to the medieval quarter of the city and see the Castle? Alternatively, join us on a visit to Crook Hall Gardens; set on the edge of Durham, wander at leisure through a series of interlinking gardens, each with its own style and character. (NT Members Free; Nonmembers £8.00). After lunch we head home making a comfort stop en-route.
