Staying at the Mercure Gloucester Bowden Hall Hotel
4 DAYS | 19th September 2022
When it comes to the quintessential image of idyllic rural England, few regions in Great Britain can compare to the sleepy, honey-stoned village of the Cotswolds. Whilst on our tour we will visit Sudeley, one of the country’s greatest castles, and the magnificent Arts and Crafts style Rodmarton Hall. We’ll see the stunning landscape from the unique perspective of a steam train and a guided tour of Cheltenham, ‘Britain’s most complete Regency Town’.
Our base for the tour is the Mercure Gloucester Bowden Hall Hotel, situated on the outskirts of picturesque Gloucester. Surrounded by acres of beautiful grounds, this elegant country house boasts modern rooms, the Bar and Brassiere restaurant and an elegant lounge bar. All bedrooms have en-suite facilities and refreshment tray. There is no lift in this hotel.
We depart calling for coffee en-route to one of the region’s hidden gems; Sudeley Castle and Gardens is a much-loved family home with award-winning grounds. The castle has played an important role in England’s history, boasting royal connections that stretch back over 1,000 years. Late afternoon we take the short journey to our hotel and base for the next three nights.
Today we call for coffee at Cotswold Water Park Visitor Centre, with 180 lakes set in over 42 square miles. We then head into the historic wool town of Tetbury. Known as something of an architectural gem, many of the wool merchants’ houses remain as they were in the 16th and 17th centuries. After lunch we journey to Rodmarton Hall; a supreme example of a house built and furnished according to Arts and Crafts ideals, it was one of the last of its kind to be constructed and many features are sculpted from local stone and timber. After a tour of the house, you will have free time in the garden and we shall complete our visit with tea and cake.
Today a guide will take us on a tour of the Regency Spa town of Cheltenham, where many splendid sights wait to be seen. Please note the tour will be part walking and part on the coach. After free time for lunch in Cheltenham, we then take the short journey to the station for a return trip on the Gloucester Warwickshire Steam Railway, where you simply sit back, relax and admire the stunning scenery.
After a leisurely breakfast we make our way to the pretty town of Burford with its famous high street; sweeping downhill towards the River Windrush, its medieval bridge and its impressive church accompany unbroken lines of ancient houses and shops. With ample time for a stroll and morning coffee, we then continue our scenic journey calling at Jeremy Clarkson’s Diddly Squat Farm Shop en-route to the delightful town of Stow on the Wold for lunch. We head for home making a stop enroute arriving early evening.
Tour includes: 3 Nights dinner, bed and breakfast; entrance to Sudeley Castle; Rodmarton Hall with tea and cake; Cheltenham guide and train ride.
