England’s Lakeland Glory

Staying at the Newby Bridge Hotel

5 DAYS | 2nd October 2022
‘The loveliest spot man hath ever found’ can be William Wordsworth describing only one place: the Lake District. A National Park and England’s greatest beauty spot, why not join us as we savour the delights of this unique region. We’ll see quaint villages and picturesque towns by road, rail and water, visit one of the areas most stunning halls, sample their famous tipples, and explore the industries that have only added to the Lakes’ fame.

In the scenic village of Newby Bridge, the Newby Bridge Hotel sits at the tranquil southern end of the lake. With lovingly landscaped gardens, the hotel’s dining room overlooks the grounds, the traditional Huntsman Inn bar offers a warm welcome and there is a private leisure centre. All rooms are en-suite and with a TV and tea tray.

After departing our first port of call is Barton Grange Garden Centre for a browse and morning coffee. We then continue north to Holker Hall and Gardens; regarded as one of the finest stately homes in Britain, it is home to Lord and Lady Cavendish and displays many fine examples of antique furniture and art. After ample time to wander the house, gardens and enjoy lunch we then head to our hotel.

This morning we venture north taking us along the side of Windermere to the pretty village of Grasmere where we stop for morning coffee. Our journey then takes us to the lively market town of Keswick situated at the head of Derwentwater. After time to browse the local wares and grab lunch we make our way to the Lakes Distillery, situated near Lake Bassenthwaite, for a fascinating guided tour followed by samples of the world-class gin, vodka and whisky.

Our venture today takes us just up the road to the Lakeland Motor Museum; with over 30,000 exhibits including the Campbells of Bluebird fame, the museum makes for a wonderful visit. After an insightful morning we continue on to Cartmel, famous for its Priory and sticky toffee pudding. You will have time for lunch and to browse this quaint village before we head to Haverthwaite for a trip on the steam railway, taking in the beautiful landscape as we go.

Today we take the scenic route up the west side of Lake Windermere to the stunning little village of Hawkshead for a coffee. Once refreshed we continue north to the lively town of Ambleside, one of the most popular towns in the Lake District. Standing at the head of Windermere and boasting many unusual shops, there is everything on offer from jewellery made from locally quarried stone to home-made chocolates and beers. For our return journey you have the option of taking the boat from Ambleside back to Lakeside at the bottom of Windermere, where the coach will collect you. Alternatively, you can return by coach the choice is yours. (Optional boat trip £15.00 please state at the time of booking).

We complete our tour of the stunning Lake District with a drive up Kirkstone Pass to Glenridding, where we will stop for refreshments before we board the steamer for a one hour cruise up to Pooley Bridge on the beautiful Ullswater Lake.
