One of England’s most beautiful regions, the North East is a wonderful mix of stunning scenery, rich history and bustling cultural activity. On our way to Durham we visit the fascinating Jacobean family home and its fabulous grounds of Kiplin Hall. We also have the opportunity to visit the famous Beamish Museum showcasing the social and industrial history of the area between 1825 and 1913. Durham as a World Heritage Site is home to many monuments including a great Norman Cathedral overlooking the River Wear, as well as some of the best shopping the region has to offer. Another truly epic event is the spectacular Kynren Show, as it takes its audience through 2000 years of British history, myth and legend. Be captivated by incredible sets, stunts, horsemanship, worldclass pyrotechnics and a cast and crew of over 1500 volunteers!
Our base for the tour is the 4* Durham Marriott Royal County Hotel; centrally located in the historic city and it is situated right on the banks of the River Wear. The hotel boasts the Brew bar and lounge and Market Kitchen restaurant. The hotel also has a lift.
We depart calling for coffee en-route to Kiplin Hall. We have ample time to explore this fascinating home and its fabulous grounds. Kiplin Hall was built in the early 1620s for George Calvert, Secretary of State to James I and founder of Maryland, USA. We take a tour of the Hall and discover the history of the four fascinating families, all connected by blood or marriage, who have owned the Hall through the centuries. There will be time to explore the gardens which have been sensitively restored to there former glory. Late afternoon we continue north, to Durham and our hotel.
Today is yours to enjoy exploring the delights of Durham. Why not visit the Cathedral, take a stroll around the shops or venture to the medieval quarter of the city and see the Castle? We have an early dinner before making our way to the amazing Kynren Show; named as one of the “Top Five Performances to see in the UK”, this really will be an evening of epic proportions!
Today you have the option of spending the day exploring Durham or alternatively join us on a visit to the brilliant museum of Beamish. Spend the morning exploring the Colliery Village, the Town or Home Farm that all recreate a fascinating bygone age. There are also shops and a tramway system that you can jump on to take a ride around the site. With ample time for lunch, there are a number of eating establishments to choose from. (Please confirm at the time of booking if you would like to visit Beamish the cost is £15.50) Midafternoon we board the coach and collect the passengers who have decided to explore Durham further and then we head for home. Making a comfort stop en-route we aim to arrive early evening.
