Staying at The Royal York and Faulkner Hotel
6 DAYS | 19th July 2022
Sidmouth is one of the most unspoilt resorts in the country and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful. Quiet and unhurried it is ideal for a relaxing get away. In the resort you will find delightful gardens, cliff path walks, picturesque beaches, and shops that still offer the personal service and friendliness found in a country town. Our hotel is situated on Sidmouth’s Esplanade and is perfectly located for all the resort amenities. The Royal York and Faulkner Hotel has been in the same family for over 50 years and boasts three lounges and a cocktail bar, and a wonderful health complex. All rooms have ensuite facilities, TV, and courtesy tea trays. The hotel has a lift.
We depart Macclesfield calling for coffee enroute to Oakham Treasures, one of the largest privately owned museums of retail and farming history in the UK. An uplifting trip down memory lane awaits, with its vast and unique collection of memorabilia from the last century. There really is something for everybody, from the thousands of items in the historic stores, to the impressive display of vintage tractors and farm equipment. After free time for a browse and lunch we continue south to Sidmouth.
Today we venture to the fabulous 64 acres of Bicton Park Gardens where many rare and beautiful species are on display. You will have time to visit the Palm House, Italian Garden and Arboretum, and perhaps take a trip on the Bicton Woodland Railway. Having had time to also visit the tea rooms we then make our way back to Sidmouth for a relaxing afternoon.
This morning we take the short journey to the Donkey Sanctuary where we stop for coffee. Then we continue on to Axminster and their famous carpets. It’s also market day today so head out for a browse around the stalls, grab some lunch and perhaps visit the local museum. We then take the scenic run back to Sidmouth arriving back at the hotel mid-afternoon.
Powderham Castle is our destination for adventure today; enjoying a unique, picturesque setting within an ancient deer park beside the Exe estuary, there are over 600 years of history to be discovered within the walls and the castle is one of Devon’s oldest family homes. There will be time to stroll through the gardens, visit the Castle and have lunch. We then take the short journey to the quaint historic port of Topsham on the River Exe where we board a Stuartline cruiser for a relaxing afternoon sail down the river to Exmouth.
Free day in Sidmouth to explore at leisure.
After breakfast we say a sad farewell to Sidmouth and head for home calling for coffee en-route. We make our lunch stop at Webbs of Wychbold Garden Centre and aim to be back late afternoon/early evening.
Tour includes: 5 nights dinner, bed and breakfast; entrance to Oakham treasures, Bicton Park Gardens, Powderham Castle and a river cruise.
