Wells, Cheddar, Chavenage & The Somerset Carnivals

Staying at The Swan Hotel in Wells

3 DAYS | 16th November 2021

Our short break takes us to the City of Wells in Somerset with its historic centre, the magnificent cathedral, and the unique moated Bishop’s Palace. We venture to Cheddar to see the famous cheese being made and the privately owned historic house of Chavenage. The highlight of the tour is a visit to Shepton Mallet for Somersets Electric Light Carnival Parade. This spectacular illuminated event showcases music, dancers and magnificent floats all aglow with the lights from thousands of coloured bulbs, a truly unmissable event.

Our base for the tour is The Swan Hotel in Wells, a 15th-century former coaching inn. A quaint hotel it is a mere three minute walk from the grand 12th-century Wells Cathedral and a four minute walk from the medieval Bishop’s Palace and Gardens. As well as a lovely restaurant and cosy bar, there is an exercise room and a sauna to relax in after a fun-filled day. All bedrooms feature modern en-suite bathrooms, free WiFi, a TV, and tea and coffee making facilities.

Departing Macclesfield we call for coffee en-route to the village of Cheddar and the Cheddar Gorge. After free time for lunch we then visit the famous Cheddar Cheese Shop and Visitors Centre; after a fascinating demonstration you will want to make the cheese yourself! After our visit you will have time to take a browse around the shop and sample the cheese before we take the short journey to Wells and our hotel for the next two nights.

Enjoy a full day at your leisure in the historic city of Wells. With so much to see and do why not visit the Cathedral or the Bishops Palace and Gardens or take a stroll around the shops, market place or Artisan Quarter? After an early dinner we board the coach for the short journey to Shepton Mallet where we take our places for the Electric Light Carnival Parade. What began as part of the Guy Fawkes commemorations in the nearby town of Bridgewater, the carnival is now a dazzling display of music and pageantry for everyone to enjoy!

We say a sad farewell to Somerset and head for home. Taking the scenic route through Gloucestershire we head to the historic house of Chavenage, a wonderful Elizabethan house of mellow grey Cotswold stone and tiles. There are many interesting things to see, especially the 17th-century tapestries. The house and grounds have been used as a TV and film location on many occasions, including the hugely popular Poldark. Having enjoyed morning coffee and biscuits on arrival, we then have a guided tour of the house. After our visit we re-join the motorway network north, we make our late lunch stop at the excellent Gloucester Services and aim to arrive in the Macclesfield area around tea time.

Tour includes: Luxury coach travel throughout, 4 nights dinner bed and breakfast, river cruise and steam train ride with Cream Tea. Entrance to Westonbirt Arboretum.
