Staying at the ultra modern Hampton by Hilton Hotel
3 DAYS | 1st May 2021
Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) was an architect, designer and artist now celebrated around the world as one of the most significant talents of his time. In and around Glasgow is where he created his best-known works and where much of it still resides today. Our visit north incorporates a guided tour of the city taking in many sights and examples of his famous style, including visits to the Scotland Street Museum, House of an Art Lover and Hill House.
Our base for the tour is the ultra modern Hampton by Hilton Hotel, ideally located just a short walk from the famous Willow Tea Rooms and Buchanan Street shops. The hotel boasts a stylish bar and restaurant, and all bedrooms feature private bathrooms and complimentary WiFi.
We depart Macclesfield calling for coffee enroute to the Scotland Street Museum. Still employed as a school until the late 1970s, it is an essential destination for all Mackintosh enthusiasts as it was designed by the artist himself in the early 1900s. This stunning building now tells the story of education in Scotland and is a fascinating insight into Glasgow’s social history. Late-afternoon we make our way to our hotel to enjoy the evening at leisure.
This morning we meet our guide for a tour of Glasgow on the Mackintosh Trail and pay a visit to the House of an Art Lover. Originally designed by Mackintosh as an elegant country retreat for a person of taste and culture, today, more than 110 years later, the House aims to stimulate public interest in art, design and architecture. The remainder of the day is yours to explore the wonderful array of destinations Glasgow has to offer. Why not visit the Mackintosh Museum or the famous Willow Tea Rooms for some delicious Scottish cuisine or afternoon tea?
This morning we make our visit the famous Hill House, considered to be Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s finest domestic creation. Sitting high above the Clyde it is home to original Mackintosh furniture and interior design and also has attractive formal gardens designed in his style. Having been greeted with refreshments and shortbread we then make our way on a private guided tour. After our visit we re-join the motorway network and head south. We make a comfort stop en-route and aim to arrive in the Macclesfield area early evening.
