Suffolk & Constable Country

Staying at The Mill Hotel

5 DAYS | 22nd July 2021

There are few places in Britain more picturesque than Constable Country in Suffolk; this rural landscape was where the painter John Constable was born, and where he painted his most celebrated works. Picturesque villages, rolling farmland, rivers, meadows, ancient woodlands and a wide variety of local wildlife all combine to create what many describe as the traditional English lowland landscape.

The Mill Hotel is a beautifully converted water mill located in the centre of Sudbury, on the banks of the River Stour. It has a bar, restaurant and sun terrace each with picturesque views over the meadows. Each guest room is spacious with en-suite bathroom, WiFi, courtesy refreshments tray, and TV.

We depart Macclesfield calling for coffee enroute to the pretty town of St. Ives where we stop for lunch. We then continue south to our hotel with ample time to settle in before dinner.

After breakfast we venture to the Beth Chattos Gardens. The gardens were established in 1960 from an overgrown wasteland with poor gravel soil and boggy hollows. It has been transformed into an informal garden that harmonises perfectly with the surrounding countryside. The gardens are an inspiration with the art of planting at its best. Having had time for lunch we then take the short journey to Maldron where we take a 40 minute scenic boat cruise.

A free day for you to explore Sudbury, there is lots to see and do! Why not browse around the shops, take a stroll by the river, visit the Heritage Centre or Gainsborough’s House or perhaps take the bus to Lavenham or Long Melford?

Today we meet our guide for a tour of Constable Country taking in many of the pretty towns and villages, some you may even recognise! We make stops for morning coffee and lunch whilst we are out and about.

After breakfast we take the road north to the historic city of Ely. One of the smallest cathedral cities in England, Ely is easy to explore on foot. Highlights of the town include the cathedral, Oliver Cromwell’s House, Ely Museum and the attractive waterside with its antique centre, art gallery, cafes and walks. You will have ample free time to visit the cathedral and have lunch before we continue across country heading for home. We make a comfort stop en-route and aim to arrive in the Macclesfield area early evening.

Tour includes: Luxury coach travel throughout, 4 nights dinner bed and breakfast, guide for tour of Constable Country, entrance to Beth Chattos Garden and boat trip from Maldron.
