Durham & Kynren: An Epic Tale of England

Staying at the 4* Durham Marriott Royal Count Hotel

3 DAYS | 1st May 2021

One of England’s most beautiful regions, the North East is a wonderful mix of stunning scenery rich in history and bustling cultural activity. The famous Open Air Museum of Beamish boasts an outstanding collection of artefacts and buildings showcasing the social and industrial history of the area between 1825 and 1913. Durham as a World Heritage Site is home to many monuments including a great Norman Cathedral overlooking the River Wear, as well as some of the best shopping the region has to offer. Another truly epic event is the spectacular Kynren Show, as it takes its audience through 2000 years of British history, myth and legend. Be captivated by incredible sets, stunts, horsemanship, world-class pyrotechnics and a cast and crew of over 1500 volunteers!

Our base for the tour is the 4* Durham Marriott Royal Count Hotel; centrally located in the historic city with views of Durham Cathedral and Castle, it is situated right on the banks of the River Wear. The hotel boasts the Brew bar and lounge, Market Kitchen restaurant and a leisure centre with an indoor pool, gym, spa, sauna and steam room. All bedrooms are modern with up to date facilities. The hotel also has a lift.

We depart Macclesfield calling for coffee enroute to Durham where we spend a relaxing afternoon at Durham University’s ten-hectare Botanic Garden. The garden is set amongst beautiful mature woodlands on the outskirts of Durham and offers a wide variety of landscapes to explore and discover. There is a café for lunch or you may prefer to bring a picnic. Late afternoon we take the short journey into Durham centre and our hotel.

Today is yours to enjoy exploring the delights of Durham. Why not visit the Cathedral, take a stroll around the shops or venture to the medieval quarter of the city and see the Castle? We have an early dinner before making our way to the famous Kynren Show; a receiver of Trip Advisor’s Certificate of Excellence in 2019 and named as one of the “Top Five Performances to see in the UK”, this really will be an evening of epic proportions!

We complete our tour with a visit to the brilliant museum of Beamish. Spend the morning exploring the Colliery Village, the Town or Home Farm that all recreate a fascinating bygone age. There are also shops and a tramway system that you can jump on to take a ride around the site. With ample time for lunch, there are a number of eating establishments to choose from; why not try the famous fish and chips made in coal-fired ranges using beef dripping and served in specially printed newspaper? Mid-afternoon we board the coach and head for home. Making a comfort stop en-route we aim to arrive in the Macclesfield area early evening.

Tour includes: Luxury coach travel throughout, 2 nights dinner, bed and breakfast, entrance to Durham Botanical Gardens, Beamish and superior seating at Kynren Show.
