Croatia: Porec & The Istrian Peninsula

Staying at the 4* Valamar Zagreb

8 DAYS | 23rd September 2020

Our holiday by air this year takes us to beautiful Croatia and the Istrian Peninsula. Teardropshaped Istria in the north of Croatia borders Slovenia, and showcases a stunning coastline. Come and join us as we witness and explore the clear blue sea, the small but stunning islands, and the region’s fascinating mix of history, culture and architecture.

Our base for the tour is Porec which is situated in the middle of the Istrian Riviera; a pretty seaside town that stretches across the peninsula it looks out onto a cluster of exotic islands. There is a plethora of features on offer, from Roman architecture, Venetian houses and a Byzantine Basilica, to a wonderful selection of bars, cafés and restaurants. Our hotel is the 4* Valamar Zagreb set in large gardens and located near the stunning beachfront in quiet surroundings. Just a ten minute stroll or five minute trip on a land train that you can catch from outside the hotel, takes you to the town centre. This modern hotel offers a delightful outdoor swimming pool, beach and wellness centre, a lovely panoramic terrace, a large lounge with occasional evening entertainment, and a restaurant serving an extensive buffet. The spacious bedrooms boast a balcony, TV, air-conditioning, and WiFi. The hotel also has a lift.

We depart Macclesfield for the short journey to Liverpool for our 10.30am flight to Pula. We are met at the airport by a local coach company for our journey to Porec and our hotel. The remainder of the afternoon is yours to spend at leisure; why not relax by the pool or perhaps take a stroll along the seafront?

This morning we meet our guide for a walking tour of Porec to get our bearings. During our tour of the town we visit the 6th-century Euphrasian Basilica, a World Heritage Site and one of Europe’s finest intact examples of Byzantine art. We will then have free time for a relaxing lunch in town or on the waterfront and then perhaps a stroll around the shops.

Day at leisure. Why not stroll into town and then take the land train over to Zelena Laguna, a 40 minute trip that enjoys stunning coastal views. Alight the train at the end of the line, maybe have an ice cream or coffee, and then return via the water taxi or back on the land train. The cost is very reasonable and well worth doing, and the choice is yours!

Our tour today takes us to the intriguing city of Pula and its wonderful array of historical sites. From the Roman Colosseum and Theatre, to the Temple of Augustus, the Arch of Sergii and stunning Venetian palaces, there is something for everyone. Upon arrival we will have time for morning coffee before we embark on our part walking, part coach-travelling tour of the city. There will be free time for lunch and to explore at leisure before we return to Porec.

Day at leisure. This is the ideal opportunity to visit the beautiful city of Venice, as it is so easy to do from Porec. The catamaran leaves from the harbour at about 8.00am and arrives in Venice around 10.45am. Why not spend the day exploring Venice’s multitude of famous sites, from St Mark’s Basilica, to the Doge’s Palace and St Mark’s Square, and depart at around 5.00pm. The cost is approx. £70.00 and is easily bookable from the harbourside or through the concierge in the hotel.

Our excursion today takes us on a scenic boat trip down the coast to the pretty town of Rovinj where we spend the morning. There will be time to stroll around the shops, visit the market and have lunch. We then retrace our coastal route back to Porec this time taking us into the beautiful Lim Fjord en route.

Day at leisure. Why not relax and soak up the sun or perhaps take a stroll into town for a little last-minute souvenir shopping?

After a leisurely breakfast you will have time for a stroll along the seafront before we head to the airport for our afternoon flight back to Liverpool. A Roy McCarthy Coach will be waiting to meet us at Liverpool Airport to bring us back to the Macclesfield area.
