Staying at the Double Tree by Hilton Cambridge Belfry
3 DAYS | 20th June 2020
New for 2020! Join us for a weekend break to the three fabulous destinations of Twinwood, Cambridge, and the Shuttleworth Collection and Swiss Garden in Old Warden. Travel back in time with us to the 1940s with a visit to Twinwood Airfield, the famous RAF training base where Glen Miller performed and the home of an excellent wartime museum. Our trip also includes a full free day in Cambridge with ample time to explore this fascinating and multi-faceted city. To conclude our weekend we visit both the Shuttleworth Collection, an internationally famous aeronautical and automotive museum, together with its neighbouring Swiss Garden, an outstanding example of Regency horticultural design.
Our home for our stay is the Double Tree by Hilton Cambridge Belfry; a modern hotel in a tranquil lakeside location, it is the perfect base for our explorations. The Bridge Restaurant provides a mix of contemporary dishes and tempting home comforts, all made, where possible, with locally sourced produce. The Bridge Lounge Bar is a lovely spot for a relaxing beverage at the end of a busy day, as is the indoor swimming pool and spa. All bedrooms have WiFi, TV, and a spacious bathroom, as well as tea and coffee making facilities. The hotel has a lift.
We depart Macclesfield calling for coffee and lunch en route to Twinwood. Enjoy the afternoon exploring the fascinating collection of wartime artefacts. A special feature is the Airfield Control Tower, home to the Glen Miller Museum. Twinwood has a unique connection with the famous singer and his band; on August 27th 1944 he performed a special concert at the base and later that year, as he was due to leave England for France, he boarded a Norseman aircraft outside Twinwood Control Tower and he was never seen again. Thus sparked a mystery that has fascinated the world ever since!
After a leisurely breakfast we head into the wonderful city Cambridge, for a full day to spend as you please. Why not visit one of the many colleges, take a punt on the river, stroll to the botanical gardens or try the hop-on hop-off bus? The choice is yours!
Today we head for home calling first at the Shuttleworth Collection and Swiss Garden. Enjoy either attraction, or if you are feeling energetic why not visit both? Wander and admire the planes and automobiles on show within the six large hangars and the engineering workshop. Then head next door and visit the Swiss Garden with its glass-roofed grotto, chapel and even a Swiss cottage. Having had time for lunch, mid-afternoon we head for home making a comfort stop en route and aim to arrive early evening.
