Staying at The Portbyhan Hotel & the Best Western Livermead Cliff Hotel
8 DAYS | 6th September 2019
A tale of two counties, join us for this wonderful tour to the delights of Cornwall and Devon. First is Cornwall renowned for its fabulous coastline, picturesque villages, Celtic ruins, light blue waters, gardens and unique architecture. Our base is the pretty fishing port of Looe, separated into two towns by the winding River Looe. Our accommodation for our stay is The Portbyhan Hotel, situated on the delightful quayside and just a short walk from the beach. The hotel boasts a restaurant, portside terrace and a lounge bar featuring occasional entertainment. All bedrooms have a TV and tea and coffee making facilities. The hotel does have a lift.
Our second part of the tour takes us to Devon, where sunny coast meets the rugged moor, where the palms that flourish along the sun-trap curve of the South Devon coast give way to gorse and bracken on the windswept heights of Dartmoor. Our base is the Best Western Livermead Cliff Hotel, one of very few hotels with a unique water front location. This traditional hotel boasts a lounge with stunning sea views overlooking Torbay, the Oceanic Restaurant and the new outdoor Riviera Terrace. All rooms have private bathrooms, TV, and courtesy tea tray. The hotel also has a lift.
We depart Macclesfield calling for coffee and lunch en-route to Looe in Cornwall for the first three nights.
Enjoy a morning at leisure in Looe. Our afternoon visit takes us to the historic village of Charlestown with its unspoilt original Grade II Listed harbour. As you enter the village you are transported back in time, the sight of the small fleet of square riggers at anchor in the harbour adds to the atmosphere of times gone by. Fans of BBC’s ‘Poldark’ will be familiar with the starring role that the stunning Cornish location plays in the TV series. We have included a visit to the Shipwreck Museum, where there are nearly 8,000 artefacts from over 150 shipwrecks. These rare artefacts bring stories of the sea to life with rich tales of triumph, treasure and tragedy. You will have time to explore the cafés and gift shops before we return to the hotel.
This morning we venture to the charming fishing port of Padstow surrounded by glorious sandy beaches, at the head of the Camel River. Spend time watching the harbour life and perhaps have lunch in one of the popular eateries such as Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant. We have a relaxing afternoon visiting Pencarrow Gardens, and its array of landscapes from formal gardens to ancient woodlands. Why not complete the day with a Cornish cream tea in the Peacock Café.
This morning we say farewell to Cornwall and take the short journey north over the River Tamar and into Devon. Our first stop is Plymouth where we meet our guide for a tour of this splendid city. We then have free time to explore and have a relaxing lunch. Midafternoon we continue our journey to Devon and Torquay for the remaining four nights.
A day at leisure in Torquay.
Our adventure today takes us to Totnes where we stop for morning coffee and a browse. We then board the train for a trip on the South Devon Railway taking us on a scenic route along the river Dart to Buckfastleigh. You will have time to visit the little museum before we continue on to Buckfast Abbey where we have time for lunch and to visit the Abbey. We return to the hotel mid-afternoon.
After a relaxing breakfast we take the short journey along the coast to the fishing port of Brixham. There will be time for a stroll and morning coffee before boarding The Western Lady for our sail along the coast back to Torquay. Afternoon at leisure in Torquay.
After breakfast we board the coach for our journey home calling for coffee and lunch enroute. We aim to arrive in the Macclesfield area early evening.
