Wiltshire is rich with ancient heritage and is packed with jaw-dropping houses and gardens. Its verdant landscape is littered with more mysterious stone circles, processional avenues and ancient barrows than anywhere else in Britain. Join us as we explore the fantastic gardens of Bowood House, the magnificent family home of the Marquis and Marchioness of Lansdowne. We will also visit Abbey House gardens, once the home of the naked gardener, as well as Great Chalfield Manor a 15th-century manor house with an Arts and Crafts garden. Wiltshire really is a county crammed full of English charm waiting to be explored.
Our base for the tour is the historic market town of Chippenham and the 17th century. Best Western Plus Angel Hotel. We depart Macclesfield calling for coffee enroute to Highfield Garden World where we make our lunch stop. We then continue our journey to Great Chalfield Manor; this beautiful medieval manor sits in peaceful countryside, with terraces, topiary houses, gazebo, lily pond, roses and views across the spring-fed fishpond. We complete our visit with tea and cake in the barn before taking the short journey to Chippenham and our hotel.
This morning we visit the historic market town of Marlborough with the second widest high street in Britain. You will have time to stroll around the market and shops and perhaps visit the church and have a coffee. We return to Chippenham for the afternoon at leisure. Why not visit the museum with its fascinating story of this historic market town.
Our excursion today takes us firstly to Avebury Stone Circle, one of the greatest marvels of prehistoric Britain. There will be time to stroll around the stone circle and have a coffee and visit the shop before we continue on to Bowood House. Discover the rich and fascinating history of the Lansdowne family, and their house set within 100 acres of beautifully landscaped ‘Capability’ Brown Parkland. Surrounding the Georgian House is the Italian-inspired Terrace Garden, the Walled Gardens and the herbaceous border and magnificent mile long lake. We spend the remainder of the day at Bowood giving you ample time to visit the house and gardens.
After a leisurely breakfast we venture to Malmesbury and the Abbey House Gardens. Boasting 1300 years of history the first King of England is supposedly buried somewhere in the garden, two saints were thrown down the well, and it is now one of the great gardens of the world.
