Staying at The Ardoe House Hotel and Spa
6 DAYS | 7th July 2019
Our summer tour north of the border takes us to the heart of Scotland and the magnificent valley of the River Dee. Rising high in the Cairngorm Mountains and running east to its mouth at Aberdeen the river flows through some of Scotland’s finest scenery. Midway, in the shadow of Lochnagar mountain, lies royal Balmoral Castle, summer home of the Royal Family. Hence the name Royal Deeside.
Our tour is based in a relaxing location on the outskirts of the ‘Granite City’ of Aberdeen, a vibrant city it lies on the edge of the North Sea between the Rivers Dee and Don and is surrounded by beautiful beaches and rugged scenery.
The Ardoe House Hotel and Spa is a Victorian mansion with original staircases, fireplaces and wood panelling. Set in quiet countryside the hotel has an award winning restaurant, a brasserie, drawing room and whisky bar, leisure facilities. All bedrooms have private bathrooms, TV and free WiFi. The hotel also has a lift.
We depart Macclesfield fairly early for our journey north. We call for coffee and lunch en-route.
This morning we meet our guide to explore the many sights of the exciting city of Aberdeen, also known as the Granite City. After our tour we will have free time to explore at your leisure.
Our scenic route today takes us to the little village of Ballater where we stop for coffee and a browse. We then continue on to Crathie Church before our visit to Balmoral Castle, the Scottish home of the Royal Family.
After breakfast we head for Pitmedden Gardens where you will be amazed at over 30,000 annual bedding plants that make up the colourful designs in the parterres. We will also have time to visit the wonderful Museum of Farming Life, which explores our fascinating agricultural past. Time for lunch before we complete our excursion with a visit to Glen Garrioch Whisky Distillery for a guided tour and a wee dram.
This morning we venture to Crathes Castle; standing against a backdrop of rolling hills and set within its own glorious gardens, Crathes Castle is every inch the classic Scottish tower house. You will have time to view both the inside, with its amazing painted ceilings, as well as outside and the fantastic gardens. There is the courtyard café for lunch and a shop for you to browse.
Today we say a sad farewell to Royal Deeside and head for home, making stops en-route for Coffee and lunch. We aim to arrive in the Macclesfield area in the early evening.
