Staying at The Portbyhan Hotel
5 DAYS | 29th April 2019
Cornwall is often described as the ‘garden capital of the world’ as lush vegetation and colour give garden lovers a feast for the eyes all year round. Our tour takes us tothe magnificent Eden Project and to two of Cornwall’s magnificent gardens, where after a mild Cornish winter they are a riot of colourful blooms. Enjoying the warmth of the gulf stream these magical Cornish gardens are home to awealth of the most exciting, rare and beautiful plants and trees in the British Isles.
Our base for the tour is the pretty fishing port of Looe, separated into two towns of East and West Looe by the River Looe that flows out to the sea. Our accommodation for our stay is The Portbyhan Hotel, situated on the delightful quayside and just a short walk from the beach. The hotel boasts a restaurant, portside terrace and a lounge bar featuring occasional entertainment. All bedrooms have a TV, hairdryer and tea and coffee making facilities.
We will depart Macclesfield calling for coffee en-route to Cadbury Garden Centre where we will stop for lunch. We will then continue south and aim to arrive at our hotel late afternoon.
Today we visit the famous Eden Project, regarded by some as the eighth wonder of the world. It is a dramatic global garden housed in tropical biomes that nestle in a crater the size of 30 football pitches. There is so much on offer and well worth a visit.
Our tour today takes us to the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Twenty-five years ago, Heligan’s historic gardens were unknown and unseen; lost under a tangle of weeds. It was only the chance discovery of a door in the ruins that led to the restoration of this once great estate. Now the Lost Gardens take pride of place among the finest gardens in Cornwall. Upon arrival we have organised a guided tour, to give you an insight you will then have free time to wander at leisure. Mid-afternoon we head back to the hotel.
For the third day we have an optional morning visit to Lanhydrock, a magnificent late Victorian country house with extensive gardens and wooded estate. At this time of year the garden will come to life with bluebells and a rainbow of colour from the rhododendron trees and the herbaceous borders. We will have time to visit the house, gardens and café before we return to Looe and spend the afternoon at leisure. (National Trust property members free and non-members £14.55 approx.). Alternatively spend the day at leisure in Looe.
After breakfast we head for home calling for coffee and lunch en-route. We aim to arrive in the Macclesfield area early evening.
