Monday 1st

Barnsdale Gardens

Stopping for coffee en route we head for Oakham, the county town of Rutland, and to Barnsdale to see Geoff Hamilton’s Gardens. With 38 individual gardens in an eight acre site there is also an excellent tea room where we will have time for lunch. There is plenty to see and do whether you are a keen gardener, a beginner, or simply looking for a lovely day out. We head for home mid-afternoon and make a quick comfort stop en route. Monday 1st

Rutland: England’s Smallest County

Today we venture to Rutland, the smallest county in England. Stopping for coffee en route we head to Oakham where we will have time for lunch and to visit the castle or museum. We then take the short journey to Rutland Water where we have a cruise on the Rutland Belle, a 45 minute circular tour with an informative commentary all about the area. There will be time for a cuppa or an ice cream before we head for home. (Inc. cruise). (N.B. This excursion runs in conjunction with Barnsdale Gardens.).

Friday 5th

Ashton-under-Lyne Market & College for Lunch

We head to Ashton-under-Lyne where we spend the morning at the fabulous market where an array of local wares are available. Why not head to the nearby shopping centre for some of the more high street stores? Just before lunch we take the short journey to Tameside College where we sit down to a delicious two course lunch, prepared and served by catering students. (Inc. two course lunch).

Tuesday 16th

A Day in the Lakes: Rail & Sail

Calling first for coffee en route, we make our way to Haverthwaite Railway Station. There we board the steam train for a relaxing and scenic journey to Lakeside, situated at the bottom of Lake Windemere. We then board one of the Lake Cruisers for a picturesque sail up to Bowness where we spend the remainder of the day at leisure. Why not pop along to the Beatrix Potter Exhibition, browse the local shops, or simply take in the atmosphere of this now famous tourist honeypot? (Inc. single train and boat trip).

Monday 22nd

Sheffield Botanical Gardens & Wentworth Castle Gardens

Today we head to Sheffield Botanical Gardens with time for coffee. Home to several listed buildings, the most impressive is the Grade II curvilinear Glass Pavilions housing plants from all over the world. In the afternoon we head to Wentworth Castle Gardens where we have time for lunch in the café before exploring some of the 40 acres of formal gardens and national collections of Rhododendrons, Camellias and Magnolias. These glorious gardens, woodlands and parklands were once created for the privileged few and are now preserved for everyone to enjoy. (Botanical gardens free, Wentworth Castle Gardens NT members free, nonmembers £8.50 approx.).

Tuesday 30th

Abakhan Crafters & Conwy

Today we call firstly at Abakhan for a visit and a browse of this ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ of crafter’s shops. Having also had time for a morning coffee, we then head to the quaint town of Conwy. A town rich in history, many traditional structures still line its streets and none is more prominent than the mighty 13th-century castle. With the remainder of the day in Conwy you will have ample time to enjoy a stroll by the harbourside, walk the walls, visit the castle and have lunch in one of the many cafés or pubs.
