June Day Trips

Friday 1st

Southport & Martin Mere Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust

Firstly we will make the journey to Southport for the passengers wishing to spend the day here. There is an excellent shopping centre, as well as a pier and boating lake to explore. We then continue on to Martin Mere where at this time of year the wildflowers add colour to the walkways and meadows; courting birds display their finest plumage and songs. In 2017 a stunning new garden opened, which pays tribute to the Canadian outdoors and picked up a Gold medal at the 2017 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Mid-afternoon the coach returns to Southport giving the Martin Mere passengers time for a stroll along the pier before we return home.

Sunday 3rd

Bridgemere & Hodnet Hall Gardens for the Plant Hunter’s Fair

We spend the morning at Bridgemere Garden World with time for coffee before we continue on to Hodnet Hall Gardens. The 63 acre garden has grand vistas, intimate and secluded areas, a walled kitchen garden, and magnificent lakes. The Plant Hunters Fair also takes place today full of inspiring ideas with a great choice of plants for sale. There is also a café for lunch.

Friday 8th

Skipton & Pennine Boat Cruise

Calling for coffee en-route to Skipton where we have time for a browse around the market and have lunch. Mid-afternoon we board the Cobbydale barge for a leisurely cruise down the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Relax and enjoy the panoramic views of the Pennine countryside and soak up amazing views only seen by boat. (Inc. canal cruise with tea/coffee and a commentary)

Friday 15th

Historic Houses – the Cavendish Connection

Our first stop for coffee is Chatsworth Garden Centre where we will also enjoy a brief glimpse of Chatsworth House, the Palace of the Peaks. We then continue on to the spectacular Hardwick Hall built by Bess of Hardwick (Mother of Charles Cavendish). Where we will have time for lunch in the restaurant or if you prefer a picnic. In the afternoon your are free to explore the finest collection of 16th & 17th century embroideries and tapestries. Outside, there are tranquil walled courtyards, fragrant herb gardens, orchards and lawns to explore. (NT Members free non-members £13.76)

Saturday 23rd

Summer Time at Barnsdale Gardens

Stopping for coffee en-route we head for Oakham the county town of Rutland, and to Barnsdale to see Geoff Hamilton’s Gardens. With 38 individual gardens in an eight-acre site and an excellent tea room where we will have time for lunch there is plenty to see and do, so whether you are a keen gardener, a beginner or a visitor looking for a wonderful day out Barnsdale Gardens makes for a brilliant choice. We head for home mid-afternoon and make a quick comfort stop en-route. (Inc. entrance)
