In October 2013 we had the privilege of coachbuilder Plaxton exhibiting on their stand at the Coach and Bus live exhibition our new 57 seater Leopard. This is an article taken from the Plaxton website about the coach.
Roy McCarthy Coaches of Macclesfield is to take delivery of one of the first PlaxtonLeopard bodied coaches following its exhibition at Coach and Bus Live on 2/3 October 2013. A history of working in partnership with Plaxton gave Managing Director Andy McCarthy the confidence to place an order for the Volvo B9R based coach off plan, ‘We were pleased to work with Plaxton to develop all aspects of the new design which are important to operators like ourselves. The result is a coach that meets the needs of our business, particularly the in swing door which will speed up boarding times. Plaxton products have a strong tradition in our fleet and we look forward to the Leopard continuing this.
The 12.8m long vehicle features 57 reclining Tourismo seats, trimmed in a blue moquette, with age adjustable three point belts, centre arm rests and foot rests. Customer comfort is assured through the specification of integrated climate control. A Bosch radio/CD/PA system provides the entertainment.
Mechanically, the rear engined Euro 5 Volvo B9R chassis is powered by the economical Volvo D9B 9.36 litre engine delivering 380bhp and driving through Volvo I-Shift automated transmission. Externally, the new Leopard is finished in Roy McCarthy Coaches distinctive blue and cream livery.
The all new stainless steel framed Plaxton Leopard represents the fourth new coach model to be introduced since Plaxton joined the Alexander Dennis family. It’s built to a lower overall height than the Panther range and features a pivot entrance door to improve boarding cycle time. Intended as a day hire coach or for short duration touring with up to 59 passengers, the Leopard can also feature 3+2 seating for high capacity operations such as home to school transport.
Roy McCarthy Coaches is a family business founded in 1971 and now in its third generation with Andy McCarthy’s sons Danny and Max joining him in the business. From its Cheshire base, the company operates 11 coaches on a variety of private hire, contract and school work together with private tours and an in house tours and excursion programme on which the new Leopard will be used. Plaxton coachwork has regularly been chosen by the company with the current fleet consisting mainly of Paragons and Profiles together with a Panther and a heritage Paramount bodied Bedford.
Plaxton Coach & Bus Sales at Anston will supply the Leopard to Roy McCarthy Coaches.’
While putting together information for the new site we stumbled on this old picture of one of our first executive coaches TVU!
The picture is courtesy of Iain Lawson who commented:
“It was taken in Turner’s Coach Park, Rigby Road, Blackpool I think in August 1984 or maybe Easter 1985. Blackpool FC’s football ground lies behind and to the left is/was where the donkeys were kept for the beach rides, with Tiffany’s Ballroom further over at Central Drive.”
If you happen to have any old pictures of any of our coaches, drivers or tours we would love to see them and they may also get shown on this website!
